looking to make some changes.
1) The wraparound portion was not built properly and was starting to sag
– this needed to be taken care of from a safety standpoint.
2) The deck lacked a staircase which we wanted to gain access to the yard below.
3) The deck had at least 5 layers of solid stain that was cracked and peeling – we had been fighting it with chemical removers, pressure washing, sanding, and scraping, but were not getting anywhere. We also found that some of the railing and deck boards were beginning to rot.
We wanted the deck to look good again and reduce the amount of maintenance needed. We requested quotes from three contractors. The first portion of the job was pretty well defined. For the staircase, we weren’t exactly sure where it should start and end and each contractor talked through different options. Cary came up with a plan that leveraged the existing deck frame, minimized the impact to our landscaping at ground level and simplified the construction of the staircase itself. We also asked to quote low maintenance vinyl railing. Cary explained that while the vinyl materials were lower cost, the installation of vinyl railing was more labor-intensive than aluminum railing and that we may be better off with the aluminum railing. At that point, we were planning to continue to tackle the deck floor boards on our own. We ended up receiving two quotes and Paragon was significantly lower. That said, each contractor came up with a different project plan – the more expensive quote would have ended up with vinyl railing and a staircase with a midway landing and some complicated angles. Cary’s quote to take care of the failing wraparound, add the staircase and replace the railings with aluminum railing was substantially lower. It also included line items on the quote for replacing the floor boards with two different material options – we hadn’t asked for that specifically, but he included it after I had explained the struggles we were having with removing the stain. We decided to replace all the floor boards with new cedar.
Once we decided to go with Paragon, things went very well. Cary did the entire project himself – he was professional, cleaned up the area each day and kept us informed on timing. He is a skilled craftsman and has a lot of experience which helped us save money and get an even better result than we anticipated. The deck looks well integrated with our home and there is no evidence of the wraparound that was removed (except for the concrete footing that we left in the ground). We have access to our yard and garden without having to walk around the house and will have significantly less required maintenance which will give us more time to enjoy our deck without cursing it.
We are very pleased and would definitely use Paragon again.

Description of work:
My wife and I purchased a home recently and we wanted to convert the old dark and gloomy basement and garage into usable space. Both rooms were the original block walls with open floor joist as the ceiling. We needed everything to look bright and fresh so that we can start being able to use the large amounts of space as a laundry room and workshop.
